Artist Statement by Claire Darley:

The act of drawing, especially over an extended period of time, most always includes, and seemingly elicits, philosophical inquiry. My selecting the lotus as a subject was directed by my curiosity about this plant’s symbolic place in Hinduism and Buddhism as a metaphor for the development of the individual being towards enlightenment. What insight might be gained by observing it through drawing? The name of the show, “Abundance", occurred to me while I was drawing this summer. My thoughts were full of fears: of job loss, of back room negotiations, and loss of control. This internal noise became so distracting I stopped drawing, laid back, and suddenly recognized my actual situation: overwhelming abundance. One lotus flower is a wonder to behold. A small sea, hundreds of lotus blooms, surrounded me. I think of the show as a declaration, a state of mind, as well as an observance of fact. This lotus pond is located at "Big Bone Gardens", (across the highway from Big Bone Lick State Park) so various images carry some version of those words in their title. I am very grateful to Mary Ellen Pesek and Mark Lawhorn for their generosity in allowing me to frequently visit and work on location at their lovely gardens.
